johnstown castle

When it comes to travel I’m a planner. Actually I’m a planner in my everyday life too, I just never seem to follow through on many of those everyday plans. But travel planning, that’s a whole different story. There is  such a wonderful pleasure in planning a trip…scouring the Internet for the perfect b&b and the best airfare and all types of places to see and things to do. I absolutely love to plan a trip!

Which is why it is even sweeter when on a journey I stumble across a place that is unexpected and delightful. Some place off of the beaten track like Johnstown Castle in Wexford, Ireland. Even better is that in the winter months it is free of charge to wander aimlessly around the ornamental grounds of the castle. To meander the path around the lake and to admire the statues in the gardens and to catch glimpses of the peacocks and pea hens and swans and geese. To imagine that it was once the country manor home of the likes of Mick Jagger where all sorts of decadent goings on occurred or possibly it was the home of  a proper Irish lady who strolled the lawns and had tea each day and welcomed visitors who arrived by horse and buggy…
